PICK: Buffalo Sabres -105
REASON FOR PICK: The Rangers won 4-3 here roughly two weeks ago. Despite that result, the Sabres remain a healthy 7-2 the last nine times they were a series host. I expect the Sabres to avenge the earlier loss and continue their home ice series domination this evening. While the Sabres had yesterday off, the Rangers were busy hosting the Bruins. That proved to be a hard-fought affair, as it was scoreless after regulation and went all the way to a shootout. Note that the Rangers are just 4-6 the last 10 times that they played the second of back to back games and a money-burning 67-90 (-30.3) in that situation over the past decade.
Four points out of the final playoff spot, the Sabres desperately need a victory. Additional motivation will come from the fact that they're looking to avoid getting swept in the season series. The recent series loss was particularly painful as the Sabres squandered a late third period lead. At the time, Sabres defenseman Jaroslav Spacek said: "We gave up two points against a team right next to us in the standings. It's unacceptable." Look for an inspired effort from the revenge-minded Sabres, as they cool off their guests and earn a critical two points.
